Massage Therapy at Platinum Physiotherapy Brampton

About This Service

Every massage therapist at Platinum Physiotherapy is a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) in good standing with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO). "RMT" is a protected title in Ontario under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 and the Massage Therapy Act, 1991. Becoming an RMT requires a minimum of 2,200 instructional hours at a CMTO-recognised college, passing the provincial Ontario Massage Therapy Certification Examination (multiple-choice plus OSCE), ongoing continuing education, mandatory professional liability insurance, and submission to CMTO's Quality Assurance Program and complaints process. Only RMT services are eligible for reimbursement under Canadian extended-health insurance, WSIB, and motor vehicle accident (MVA) benefits. Spa-style unregistered massage does not qualify.

Massage therapy produces measurable physiological, neurological, and psychological effects - mechanical loading reduces muscle tone via Golgi tendon organ activation, releases trigger-point referred pain patterns, increases localised blood flow; rhythmic mechanoreceptor input inhibits pain signalling at the dorsal horn (gate-control, Melzack & Wall); sympathetic nervous system activity is reduced with measurable drops in heart rate, blood pressure, and salivary cortisol (Moyer 2004 meta-analysis); serotonin and dopamine rise (Field 2005); inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α) drop and mitochondrial biogenesis signalling is upregulated post-exercise (Crane 2012 Sci Transl Med).

Our Brampton RMTs are trained in Swedish, deep tissue, myofascial release, trigger-point therapy, sports massage (pre/intra/post-event and maintenance), prenatal massage with side-lying positioning, TMJ and intra-oral massage, manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), cupping, neuromuscular therapy, cross-fibre friction (Cyriax), and instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilisation (IASTM/Graston). We match the technique to the clinical problem, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

When Should You Get This Treatment?

  • Chronic neck pain and tension-type headaches - weekly sessions targeting suboccipital, upper trapezius, levator scapulae, and temporalis reduce headache frequency 50-70% in 6-8 weeks (Lawler & Cameron 2006; Moraska 2015).
  • Mechanical low back pain - 2015 Cochrane review (Furlan) supports massage as short-term effective, particularly combined with exercise and education.
  • Fibromyalgia - moderate-quality evidence for weekly moderate-pressure massage reducing pain and improving sleep (Yuan 2015 PLoS One).
  • Piriformis syndrome and pseudo-sciatica - deep gluteal trigger-point work often resolves symptoms misdiagnosed as true radiculopathy.
  • Plantar fasciitis - plantar fascia, intrinsic foot, gastrocnemius-soleus release + IASTM as adjunct to stretching programme.
  • IT band syndrome - myofascial release of TFL, gluteus medius, vastus lateralis combined with hip abductor strengthening.
  • Thoracic outlet syndrome - release of anterior/middle scalenes, pectoralis minor, subclavius, and first rib mobilisation.
  • TMJ dysfunction - external and intra-oral masseter, temporalis, medial/lateral pterygoid release.
  • Pregnancy-related pelvic girdle and low back pain - side-lying, pregnancy-pillow-supported sessions from ~12 weeks gestation.
  • Post-surgical scar tissue and adhesions - manual lymphatic drainage plus progressive scar mobilisation from 4-6 weeks post-op.
  • Sport-specific overuse patterns - the predictable repetitive-strain patterns of each sport respond well to targeted maintenance massage.
  • Stress, sleep disturbance, and anxiety - robust short-term evidence for improved sleep quality, reduced state anxiety, lowered cortisol.

What to Expect

Your first RMT visit: health history screening (medications, surgeries, conditions that modify or contraindicate massage, specific goals), pressure preferences and areas to avoid, informed consent, and the treatment session itself. Sessions are delivered in fully private rooms with draping at all times.

Session lengths: 30 min (targeted, one region), 45 min (1-2 regions), 60 min (full therapeutic session), 75 min (deeper work or combined full-body), 90 min (complex multi-region or fibromyalgia-style slow-pressure work).

Frequency: acute soft-tissue injury or flare - 1-2 sessions/week for 2-3 weeks then taper. Chronic recurrent conditions - weekly loading phase for 4-6 weeks then biweekly to monthly maintenance. Sport performance maintenance - biweekly in-season, monthly off-season. Stress/sleep/general wellness - monthly is a reasonable default. Pregnancy - biweekly through trimesters 2-3, increasing as needed in the final weeks.

Post-treatment: mild post-massage soreness (24-48 h) is common with deep tissue or trigger-point work - hydrate, gentle movement, warm bath. Sharp, lingering, or unexpectedly severe soreness should be reported so pressure can be re-calibrated next session.

Contraindications screened at every visit: DVT, active cellulitis or skin infection, uncontrolled hypertension, severe thrombocytopenia or anticoagulation outside therapeutic range, acute haemorrhagic stroke. Relative contraindications requiring technique modification: cancer (with physician clearance), osteoporosis, pregnancy, recent surgery, acute whiplash within 72 h, severe varicose veins, diabetic neuropathy, cardiac disease.

Coverage: direct billing to Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Green Shield, Blue Cross, Desjardins, Equitable Life, Industrial Alliance, SSQ, ClaimSecure, Johnson Inc., GroupHEALTH, and most major Canadian carriers. WSIB and MVA covered under Ontario SABS. Massage therapy qualifies for Medical Expense Tax Credit.
