Motor Vehicle Accidents in Brampton

Motor vehicle accident rehabilitation at Platinum Physiotherapy is delivered under Ontario's Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS) - regulation under the Insurance Act that requires every Ontario auto-insurance policy to cover medically necessary rehabilitation for anyone injured in a motor vehicle collision, regardless of fault. This means if you were the driver, passenger, cyclist, or pedestrian in an MVA, your own (or the at-fault driver's) auto insurer pays for your treatment. You have no deductible, no co-pay, and no out-of-pocket cost within the policy limits.

We manage every step of the SABS paperwork in-house. After your first visit we prepare and submit an OCF-18 Treatment and Assessment Plan (non-Minor Injury Guideline cases) or initiate the Minor Injury Guideline (MIG) protocol via the OCF-23 form for injuries classified as WAD I-II whiplash and minor soft-tissue sprains/strains. If you have been off work we complete the OCF-3 Disability Certificate to support your Income Replacement Benefit (IRB) claim. We invoice the auto insurer directly via OCF-21, and we communicate with your adjuster throughout the claim. If the insurer denies coverage, we assist with resubmission, independent evaluation coordination, and document support for your lawyer or paralegal if your case involves a tort claim.

We treat the full clinical spectrum of MVA injuries classified by the Quebec Task Force on Whiplash-Associated Disorders (WAD I-IV): WAD I (neck pain, stiffness, no physical signs), WAD II (neck pain + musculoskeletal signs, normal neurology), WAD III (neck pain + neurological signs such as reduced reflexes, weakness, sensory loss), and WAD IV (neck pain with fracture or dislocation - referred to spine surgery). • Headache, dizziness, nausea, photophobia, cognitive fog, difficulty concentrating - all possible concussion symptoms requiring formal SCAT-6 assessment and sub-type classification (cervicogenic, vestibular, ocular-motor, autonomic, post-traumatic migraine, mood/anxiety).
• Upper back (thoracic), lower back, shoulder, or chest-wall pain from seat-belt or airbag forces.
• Radicular symptoms - numbness, tingling, shooting pain down the arm or leg - suggesting cervical or lumbar nerve-root irritation.
• Jaw pain, clicking, or limited opening (TMJ dysfunction) - common with airbag deployment or forceful head/neck rotation.
• Anxiety, avoidance of driving, hypervigilance, sleep disturbance - psychological sequelae of MVA that respond well to graded exposure and coordinated CBT.
• Delayed-onset symptoms - pain, stiffness, and headaches can emerge 24-72 hours or even 1-2 weeks after the collision as the initial adrenaline response and inflammation settle and inflammatory cascades progress; treat these as MVA injuries even if you felt fine at the scene.
• Previously treated elsewhere and discharged prematurely - we complete a new OCF-18 or continue treatment where clinically indicated.
• Denied coverage by your insurer - we review the denial, help coordinate an Independent Examination (IE), submit additional documentation, and advocate through your lawyer's office where applicable.
• MIG-limit reached ($3,500 cap) - we assist with transitioning your care to non-MIG status if your injuries meet the non-MIG criteria (documented pre-existing condition that exacerbates the current injury, psychological injury, chronic pain meeting criteria, fracture or other non-soft-tissue injury).

First visit (60-75 minutes): full MVA intake - collision mechanism (speed, direction of impact, vehicle type, head restraint position, seat-belt use, airbag deployment, loss of consciousness, post-traumatic amnesia), symptom chronology, red-flag screening (cervical myelopathy, vertebral artery signs, cauda equina), neurological examination (cranial nerves, upper- and lower-limb dermatomes, myotomes, reflexes), orthopaedic examination with WAD grading, SCAT-6 concussion screen if any head-strike or whiplash mechanism, VOMS (Vestibular/Ocular-Motor Screening), Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test if concussion suspected, TMJ screen, and condition-specific outcome measures (Neck Disability Index, Headache Impact Test HIT-6, Post-Concussion Symptom Scale PCSS, Dizziness Handicap Inventory, Patient-Specific Functional Scale).

Paperwork workflow: OCF-18 Treatment Plan submitted to your auto insurer within 5 business days of the first visit (the insurer has 10 business days to approve, deny, or request an Independent Examination). Once approved, treatment begins immediately - we do not wait for the response if your injury meets MIG criteria (MIG treatment can start right away). Interim progress reports are issued at standard intervals; OCF-3 Disability Certificate completed if you have been off work, supporting your Income Replacement Benefit (IRB) claim. At discharge we issue an OCF-24 Assessment of Attendant Care Needs only if clinically required, and a final functional summary for your file.

MIG vs non-MIG: the Minor Injury Guideline caps treatment at $3,500 total and targets WAD I-II and minor soft-tissue sprains. Non-MIG treatment is uncapped within your policy's Medical & Rehabilitation Benefit limit ($65,000 standard, higher with optional buy-up). We assess early whether your injuries meet non-MIG criteria and, where appropriate, document the clinical evidence required to transition your file.

Integrated care team: physiotherapy, chiropractic, registered massage therapy, and acupuncture are all delivered under the same OCF-18. Our team coordinates treatment plans so modalities complement rather than duplicate each other. We communicate with your family physician, any treating specialists, and - with your consent - your personal injury lawyer or paralegal if your claim includes a tort action.
